The Pros and Cons of Colostomy

 A colostomy is a surgical procedure which redirects the colon (large intestine) to a stoma, a surgically created hole, in the abdominal region. This procedure allows the fecal matter to move out of the body into a bag that the user wears. Unlike a cosmetic surgery, a colostomy is a major surgery which affects the body and the vital functions it performs. In some cases it is done due to a blockage in the colon. In other cases, infection due to skin sores or prior skin flap surgery results in a preventive colostomy. Here we list down the pros and cons of living after a colostomy surgery:

Pro 1: The urgency is reduced- For patients who have gone through the surgery, the urgency to rush to the bathroom is significantly reduced. While they may feel a little sense of urgency if they allow the ostomy bag to fill too much, the problem is greatly reduced otherwise. And once they get used to it, they will feel much more comfort.

Pro 2: No more accidents- After a successful surgery, the chances of accidents, due to rushing to the bathroom every now and then, are also reduced. There are cases when people go to the bathroom more than 20 times in a day before the surgery and this increases the chances of accidents. But post the surgery, this problem is eliminated completely.

Pro 3: It becomes a part of the life- Though it takes time adjusting with an ostomy and stoma bag, but one adjusts with time. And after some time, one easily goes to the bathroom, empties the ostomy quickly and gets back to work like usual. It becomes a part of the natural process, without any extra stress or effort. 

Con 1: There will be leaks- While the chances of accidents are reduced, it is important to know that leaks will happen from time to time. It may take some time for patients to find the right appliance that helps in limiting the leaks. For those who have oily skin, the chances of leaks are more common.

Con 2: The schedule is not there- Ideally, an ostomy would last for a set amount of time but you can change it when you want. In some situations, it may last for 2 to 3 days and others it may last for up to 7 days. Making a definite plan is not possible and you must be prepared for this.

    I was diagnose April 17,2015 and find out I'm HIV positive.I was scared because there is no cure for HIV/AIDS but today some people still don't believe that there is cure for HIV, it can only be cured through Africans root and herbs,and our doctor's here in USA few of them know about the African herbal medicine can cure Hiv but they chooses to hide it from us just to make a sales of medical expertise.
