Perfecting the art of suturing

Without proper training and practice, it is very difficult to suture perfectly. Failing to do it correctly can cause serious, life-threatening infections and leave behind a scar. Hence, it is crucial for all medical students to master the art of suturing. This would require understanding and learning all the techniques of suturing. If you are a medical student and want to learn various suturing and stitching techniques, here are a few ways to do so:

Always choose the right equipment

It is very crucial to choose the right surgical needles and sutures while suturing. Every medical equipment is designed for a particular purpose. Depending on the needs like a less wound tensile strength, deep tissue space closure, or less scarring, an expert must select the right suture thread (polyester, nylon, or other material) and needle. Even for practicing, one must always use the right equipment. Also, make sure that it is a good quality suture like Ethicon sutures.

Find yourself suitable dummies

Many things can be the ideal dummy for practicing suturing. Many people suggest using fruits as the base to perfect your suturing skills. Bananas, grapes, and peaches are considered the best fruits for practicing this skill. Peaches are preferred because their surface is identical to paediatric skin. Bananas (green bananas) are considered ideal because they have the same toughness as human skin. When it comes to practicing stitching up the thinner skin like the skin of an elderly, suturing peeled fruit skin on to grapes is a great way. Other common dummies include meat pieces like chicken breast. It helps to understand how it feels like to stitch muscle tissues. There are various types of sutures available and one should practice with all the types.

Always wear gloves while practicing

Whether you are practicing or performing professionally, it is always paramount to wear gloves during the process. This is because once you start practicing without gloves, getting habituated to working with gloves becomes very difficult for a lot of people. There are various types of gloves available to perform suturing. Experts recommend wearing powder-free nitrile gloves while practicing suturing.

Consult with experts

Always consult with experts and observe how they perform suturing. It will help to understand a lot of things like the amount of pressure required, clean-up process before stitching, right angle, materials used, etc. All these factors play a huge role in determining the effectiveness of the stitch. Also, you can consult with experts and ask them to monitor your methods.
