Different Uses of Medical Tapes


Medical tape is one of the most versatile and useful items found in a doctor’s, EMT’s or athletic trainer’s first aid kit. From holding the bandage in place to offering support to a sports injury, there are different types of medical tapes to serve different purposes.  Medical tape is a lightweight material with a pressure -sensitive adhesive on either of its side that allows it to stick to your skin.  Out of the most common uses of medical tape, holding a dressing in place to allow the wound to heal. The tape helps hold the gauze in place which is kept over the wound and taped. The absorptive layer created by the gauze helps protect and heal the wound. As a result, the wound is protected from the dirt and bacteria. Adhesive tape in also used in the treatment of sports injuries such as fractures, sprains and torn ligaments, etc.

There are different types of medical tapes available in the market. However, not everyone is aware about the difference between each and the purpose for which they can be used. Here are a few types that you must know about-

Paper tapes are hypoallergenic adhesives that are mostly used to secure bandages and dressings. They are designed in a manner that makes it easy for them to hold onto the skin while also being easy to remove without causing any damage to the skin. It also consists of tiny micropores or holes that facilitate air circulation. Non-stretch paper pulp and adhesive is used in their making.
Transpore tape is also hypo-allergenic and is translucent surgical tape with strong adhesion. It can be used for multiple purposes and can be easily torn into strips. Medical tubing and dressings that require a strong hold can easily be secured using this tape. It allows for moisture evaporation and is extremely breathable. Non-stretch transparent polyethylene film is used in its making.
Also known as strapping or sports tape, zinc oxide tape is commonly used to protect wounds, prevent sports injuries and soft tissue damage and assist cuts to heal faster. It is also used for stabilizing injured ligaments by supporting a particular muscle. It is a durable tape that remains intact and can tolerate moisture even in most humid environments. It is mostly made of non-stretch cotton or rayon (with zinc oxide adhesive).
When preparing your first kit, it is important to make medical plaster tape a part of it. They will come in handy during different situations and are extremely useful. Also, search for basic necessities such as online thermometer and BP monitor to keep your first aid kit complete.
