A Healthcare Revolution Worth It: Disposable Gloves

One of the most commonly used medical safety products is disposable gloves or medical gloves. Worn by surgeons, doctors, caregivers, dentists, nurses and all other medical professionals to avoid cross-contamination and handle various sensitive things, disposable gloves have become fundamental to the clinical practice. There are two main kinds of disposable gloves used in the healthcare sector, namely exam gloves and surgical gloves. While exam gloves are mostly worn by caregivers during exam procedures, surgical gloves are worn by surgeons during surgeries to prevent cross-contamination. Most surgeons prefer Matig gloves as they are made of high-quality materials.
History

The year 1890 witnessed the advent of one of the most innovative developments in the field of medical science – Medical Gloves. First introduced by Dr. William Stewart Halsted who was a surgeon-in-chief at Johns Hopkins University at that time, the evolution of disposable gloves is remarkable.  That was the era where patients mostly died from the bacterial infection which used to happen amidst the procedure. When the situation seemed uncontrolled,  Dr. Halsted  took the initiative and developed antiseptic procedures. It involved the sterilisation of all medical equipment needed for the surgery including disposable gloves.

In 1889, Dr. Halsted was the chief of surgery in Johns Hopkins Hospital. One day his nurse came to him and told him about contact dermatitis which was caused by the antiseptic mercuric bichloride. After this, Dr. Halsted contacted Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company and asked them to develop rubber gloves which remain unaffected when dipped in carbolic acid. This is how surgical gloves came into existence.

In the year 1964, a revolutionary method was adopted by Ansell to manufacture disposable gloves.  They employed the manufacturing technique of condoms to produce these high-end medical gloves. Consequently, a lot of time and efforts could be saved. The new gloves aided medical professionals by providing them with enhanced grip and comfort along with the improved level of safety.
In present times, various medical manufacturers are producing gloves from non-latex materials as well. These include neoprene, polyvinyl chloride (PVC or Vinyl), and nitrile. These gloves differ from each other in fit and feel. Great fit, increased level of protection and ease of use are among several factors which vouch for their excellence.
