How Hypertension Affects Wound Healing?

Blood pressure measures the pressure of the blood while in circulation. Detecting high blood pressure is difficult as it has no clear symptoms, but in severe conditions, you may face headaches, fatigue and weakness, blurry vision and at times even nausea and vomiting. Paying no heed to these symptoms can result aggravating the condition, thus causing a heart failure.

Hypertension and wound healing are like the two sides of the same coin. High blood pressure occurs when our arteries get narrowed and the blood moves through the heart’s chambers less effectively, with increased pressure which prevents the body from receiving sufficient oxygen and nutrients. For any kind of wound healing in our body, good blood supply is required, and conditions like these will inhibit the healing process. For treating venous leg ulcers and similar diseases, doctors recommend velfour compression bandages to increase the blood flow and heal the wounds faster. During prolonged hypertension periods, the heart’s chambers stretch to hold more blood to compensate for reduced pumping power. Eventually, this weakens the heart muscle walls and they are unable to pump the blood as efficiently.

When high blood pressure continues, it reduces the much-needed flow of oxygen and other essential proteins to the cells through veins and capillaries, which helps them to regenerate after an injury. Often kidneys are adversely affected due to high blood pressure causing them to retain water and sodium. This fluid buildup in our arms, legs, ankles, feet, etc. can lead to congestive heart failure. To prevent such instances, try to stick to the following steps:-

Follow a healthy diet:

Developing a healthy eating habit is essential to control high blood pressure. A high BP patient should limit the salt intake and increase the amount of potassium in his or her diet. Eat plenty of vegetables and fruits, and cut down fat from your diet. It is better if you buy a BP check machine and keep a close watch on your blood pressure at home.

Exercise regularly:

Developing an exercising habit every day helps you to stay fit and healthy. It helps in blood circulation in our body and regulates our body weight. Working out makes our heart beat faster and much harder, which results in consumption of more oxygen in our body.

Limit Alcohol and Smoking:

Consumption of too much alcohol or tobacco increases your blood pressure and opens up the possibility of having a heart attack or stroke. Alcohol adds extra calories to our body and may cause weight gain. Keeping it under check is crucial. On the other hand, smoking clogs the arteries and narrows them down. Blood flow through these arteries gets difficult and people become more prone to heart diseases. It is a habit one should get rid of immediately.
