The Life of a Medical Student

When you come from a lineage of doctors, do you really idolize any other profession? The white coats, the stethoscope around the neck, jotting down prescriptions, helping someone feel better- everything about being a doctor was nothing short of fascinating. As a child, the idea of becoming a doctor only looked more appealing with each passing year.

When I chose the medical stream, I was well-prepared to eradicate the word ‘fun’ from my dictionary. My friends pursuing other courses found it astounding whenever I told them that I studied for about 12-18 hours a day. Delving deeper into the medical education meant discovering stunning new things about the human body and how they worked. It takes you time to realize and remember that the complicated terms and words are now the reality of your life. The fascination moves beyond the white coats and focuses on the life the people in the white coats lead.

The life of a medical student is filled with a lot of exciting first times.
  • No thrill matches the thrill of entering the anatomy lab for the first dissection class. Going into the details, learning how to work the tools can easily oscillate between enthralling to terrifying and then satisfying.
  • Donning the first big medical instrument is a big deal! Everyone looks forward to the moment they buy 3M Littman Classic III Stethoscope for themselves. Similar excitement comes in when drawing in blood for the first time using a syringe, or using a sphygmomanometer.
  • Interacting with the seniors can be a humbling experience initially, but you can learn a lot from them. Interact well with them and you have friends and mentors for life, who will even teach you the night before to help you ace your exams.

We as medical students are always running the extra mile. It is easy to remember the names of those of pharmacological drugs, said no student ever. Medical students thrive on notes and books. Long hours are dedicated to knowing the intricate details. We know there is no room for second chances. The nerves are trickier than the bomb wires. A lot of focus and carefulness is required. We always need to be on the top our game. On the contrary to popular stereotypes about no life and no books, medical collages also have their annual fests, that are often lined up with the best entertainers in the country. The life of a medical is equal parts strenuous, and equal parts gripping, and cent percent exciting.
